Will Thiago Silva stay at Chelsea? Blues set to make decision with veteran defender open to staying

Chelsea have not yet decided whether Thiago Silva will stay at the club next season as the defender’s contract will expire in the summer.

The Blues will make a decision regarding the Brazilian’s future next year, the Evening Standard reports. The 39-year-old is open to extending his stay at Stamford Bridge and remains an important figure under Mauricio Pochettino, having started all 13 of their Premier League matches so far this season.

Chelsea are unsure about extending Silva’s contract as they are considering new centre-back signings ahead of the summer transfer window. They have already spent big on the likes of Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi and could look to sign a younger option for next season.

The centre-back became the oldest-ever outfield player to feature for the London side in the 4-1 loss at Newcastle on Saturday. He made a key mistake by gifting Joelinton a goal that allowed the Magpies to go 3-1 up.

Speaking after the game, he said: “I would like to apologise to everyone for the defeat, especially to my team-mates who believe in me and support me every day. I take full responsibility. Let’s gather strength and come back stronger.”
